Overview

Maintenance status used to live on an erasable whiteboard with no history, so I built Command Center, a live SQL-backed dashboard that cut downtime reporting delays by 90%.

The challenge

The maintenance floor tracked equipment status, safety issues, and active projects on a physical whiteboard. It got erased every day, kept no history, and could only be checked by walking the floor in person. Leadership had no way to see status remotely, and nothing was captured for later reference.

What I did

  1. 1

    Taught myself the stack

Taught myself the stack from scratch to design and build the full application in about a month.

  2. 2

    Moved off spreadsheets

Migrated the app off spreadsheets and local storage onto a real SQL database.

  3. 3

    Deployed to the floor

Deployed it to a dedicated screen on the plant floor for real time visibility.

  4. 4

    Built out the modules

Built 14 unified modules, covering dashboard, safety, equipment, projects, and reporting, connected through 29 API endpoints to a live database.

  5. 5

Refined with feedback across the plant

Incorporated feedback from the maintenance team as well as plant leadership and branding, as visibility into the tool grew beyond where it started.

Impact

90%

Reduction in downtime reporting delays.

28,871

Lines of code across 33 commits, 15 pages, and 16 database tables.

1 month

From first line of code to daily use on the plant floor.

Zero licensing cost

Avoided the cost of a third-party CMMS by building the whole system in-house.
